Urgent Call for Biafran Unity: "DOS And IPOB MEMBERS, SUPPORT BIAFRA DEFENSE FORCES NOW"- Alliance of Biafran Americans
Written by Nnamdi Iheukwumere
In a passionate plea posted on X on November 29, 2025, the Alliance of Biafran Americans urged members of the Directorate of State (DOS) and the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to set aside differences and support the Biafra Defense Forces (BDF).
The message, comes at a critical juncture for the Biafran separatist movement, following the recent life imprisonment sentence of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu and amid ongoing factional tensions.
This call highlights the growing emphasis on military defense as a pathway to self-determination, while acknowledging diplomatic achievements led by Prime Minister Simon Ekpa.
Acknowledging Past Efforts and Diplomatic Gains
The post begins with gratitude toward Biafrans for their contributions to the cause, stating, "Biafrans appreciate what you have done so far." It specifically praises Simon Ekpa for elevating Biafran lobbying efforts, claiming,
"PM Simon Ekpa has pushed Biafra lobbying to great heights. We have achieved our lobbying objectives on the diplomatic side."
Ekpa, a Finnish-Biafran activist and leader of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE), has been a vocal advocate for Biafran independence since splintering from IPOB. Despite his conviction in Finland on September 1, 2025, for alleged offenses—including inciting violence through online propaganda—Ekpa continues to position himself as a key figure in international advocacy.
His efforts reportedly include appeals to global entities, Ekpa's diplomatic push is contrasted with the movement's internal challenges, underscoring the post's urgency for unity. As a former athlete and politician in Finland, Ekpa declared the activation of a Biafran government in exile in 2022, focusing on self-referendum initiatives.
Nnamdi Kanu's Imprisonment and the "Kangaroo Court"
Central to the post's message is the recent sentencing of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, described as "illegally imprisoned" following proceedings in what the author calls a "kangaroo court." On November 20, 2025, a Nigerian Federal High Court in Abuja convicted Kanu on seven terrorism-related charges, sentencing him to life imprisonment.
Kanu, the founder of IPOB, has been a prominent voice for Biafran self-determination since the group's establishment in 2012. His trial, which spanned nearly a decade, involved accusations of inciting violence, broadcasting separatist messages, and separatist activities.
The verdict has sparked outrage in Nigeria' and the Bight of Biafra, where IPOB draws significant support from the Igbo ethnic group. Protests and disquiet have followed, with some residents viewing the sentence as political persecution tied to broader claims of anti-Christian and anti-Igbo marginalization.
U.S. Republican Congressman John James linked the ruling to allegations of religious persecution in Nigeria, amplifying international attention.
Kanu himself protested during the hearing, shouting objections before the life sentence was imposed.
The post argues that this event leaves "no time for division," positioning Kanu's fate as a rallying point for unified action.
A Plea to End Finger-Pointing and Focus on Defense
Emphasizing reconciliation, the message declares, "We need to come together on the defense front. This is not the time to point fingers." It directly addresses key figures: Chinasa Nworu (@ChinasaNworu), @USBDPM (Dr. Ngozi Orabueze, Deputy Prime Minister of the United States of Biafra Government), and @Ogechukwunkere(Ogechukwu Nkere, Former Acting Prime Minister of BRGIE).
These individuals are prominent Biafran activists with substantial online followings. Nworu, a self-described "Biafra Self-Determination Crusader," boasts over 135,000 followers and frequently advocates for IPOB causes.Dr. Orabueze serves in a leadership role within a Biafran exile government structure as the Deputy Prime minister, focusing on foreign affairs and grassroots mobilization. Nkere, as BRGIE's former acting prime minister is a vocal freedom fighter emphasizing total independence from Nigeria.
The post reassures that supporting a joint defense effort "doesn’t stop you from doing what you are currently doing," suggesting a complementary role for ongoing diplomatic and advocacy work. This approach aims to bridge factions: IPOB, which officially promotes non-violent self-determination but has been accused of violence by Nigerian authorities; DOS, its administrative arm; and BRGIE, which leans toward militarized defense.
The Imperative to Defend and Liberate Biafra
In bold capitals, the post proclaims, "IT’S TIME TO DEFEND AND LIBERATE BIAFRA AND TAKE CONTROL OF OUR TERRITORY." This echoes the historical aspirations of Biafra, which declared independence in 1967, leading to a brutal civil war that ended in 1970 with over a million deaths, primarily from starvation.
Today's BDF is portrayed as a modern paramilitary force protecting Biafran interests against perceived threats, including Nigerian security forces and infiltrators.
One supporting reply to the post calls for "divine and military unity," saluting the BDF as "vanguards of our safety" and invoking past "Holy Angels" (armed groups from 2020-2023) to collaborate for victory.
The message also claims, "The U.S department of war will only support a unified defense,". This alludes to hopes for international backing, building on Ekpa's lobbying. However, U.S. involvement remains limited, with figures like Congressman James offering criticism but no official endorsement.
Blessings and the Path Forward
Closing with invocations—"God bless you, God bless Biafra defense forces and God bless Biafra"—the post infuses spiritual fervor into its political call. it personalizes the appeal, urging those with "the interest of Biafrans at heart" to act. This plea arrives amid broader separatist commitments to peaceful self-determination, as stated by some groups post-Kanu's sentencing.
As the movement navigates these challenges, unity on the "defense front" could strengthen advocacy. For Biafrans, the post serves as a reminder that division weakens their cause, but true liberation may require balancing diplomacy, defense, and dialogue in a nation still healing from its civil war scars.
